This painting came from thinking about why elk have always stayed with me. There’s a resilience there that feels earned. They move through difficult country, adapt to constant change, and carry a quiet strength that doesn’t need to be aggressive to be felt. I’ve always seen them as deeply tied to the land they live in.

When I think about elk, I think about early mornings and long views, about watching light change across open ground. There’s a balance between power and awareness in how they carry themselves. They don’t feel separate from their surroundings. They feel like part of it, shaped by it over time.

With this piece, I wasn’t interested in capturing a single dramatic moment. What mattered more was presence. How the animal exists within the landscape and how it feels against the sky and the space around it. That sense of strength and connection is what I was trying to hold onto here.
