August is a special time to be in the wilderness. The grass is beginning to show signs of autumn, and the mornings feel more crisp. This painting comes from one of my favorite spots to sit and watch.
The mule deer at this point in the summer are at their peak level of comfort. They graze late into the early hours of the morning around the large meadows and lakes. Many times, they're found well into the first hour of daylight, wandering toward water.
A bachelor group of bucks is spotted just as the sun crests the ridgetop and illuminates the valley floor.
One buck quietly steps down into the creek for a drink, while the largest of the group starts heading for the wood line. This will be their regular morning routine for the next several weeks before they shed their velvet and feel their tolerance for one another fading.
