I’ve always been drawn to weather in autumn. When the aspens turn that deep gold and you see that cool blue building behind them, it’s hard to ignore. Every time I see that combination, I think of moose. That’s the season when they feel most present. It’s their rut. They’re out in the open more. Moving with purpose. More visible on the landscape.
This painting was inspired from photographs I took in Paradise Valley. It was one of those evenings where the aspens were lit just enough to separate them from the sky, but not overpower it. I kept thinking about how to use that contrast to pull the viewer in. Not just paint the animal, but let the light do some of the work.
