"Returning Home"

I had found this barn while out exploring the countryside earlier in the year which began as the foundation for this painting. Later on, I had discovered another ranch with a creek flowing through the yard which inspired the foreground. I wanted this painting to depict the peacefulness and beauty of the valleys near where I live.

I never knew how much waterfowl Western Montana had, particularly Mallards. They fill the ponds and rivers by the thousands each fall and winter. The lowland farms and ranches attract a number of them to their pastures and yards. Recently they've been taking flight again after rearing their broods and molting. It inspired me to make them the focus of this piece.
